How Does TearCare Work?

TearCare is a procedure that involves the use of two flexible eyelid devices placed on the upper and lower eyelids by a doctor. These devices, made of a soft and flexible material, conform to the shape of the eye and allow for comfortable use during the procedure. Unlike other treatments, TearCare allows the patient to keep their eyes open and blink during the procedure. The procedure typically takes 2 and a half minutes to complete at the Acworth Family Eyecare office. After the procedure, the eye doctor may manually remove any obstructions released from the meibomian glands.

What is Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD)?

Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) is a common reason behind dry eyes. When visiting a specialist for dry eye treatment, they will evaluate the function of the Meibomian Glands to determine if MGD is the cause. If left untreated, it can lead to shrinkage and atrophy of the glands, resulting in permanent dysfunction. For a particular treatment to be effective, a sufficient number of Meibomian Glands should be present. Similar to oral hygiene, patients should continue to use artificial tears and warm compresses after the treatment for maintenance.
